IRCC Processing Times

IRCC processing times for Canada immigration and citizenship applications: how estimates work, what affects delays and when prolonged processing may need review.

IRCC processing times estimate how long it may take to process many immigration and citizenship applications. They are not guarantees and they can change as inventory, application volumes and processing conditions change.

Check the current official estimate

Because processing estimates are dynamic, Fourth Dimension Immigration does not reproduce a static processing-time table. Use IRCC’s live tool for the current estimate applicable to the application type.

How IRCC describes processing time

Processing time generally begins when IRCC receives a complete application and ends when a decision is made. For mailed applications, the start point is when the complete application arrives in the mailroom. The way an estimate is calculated can vary by application category.

Why processing may take longer

  • Application completeness and complexity
  • How easily IRCC can verify information
  • Response time to document, medical, biometric or interview requests
  • Admissibility, security or background review
  • Application inventory and annual admission spaces for some permanent residence programs

When delay deserves closer review

If a file is substantially beyond the published estimate, review the online account and correspondence first. Depending on the circumstances, an IRCC web form, ATIP request or legal assessment of prolonged delay may be appropriate. Federal Court mandamus is a fact-specific court remedy. Where appropriate, mandamus proceedings through Fourth Dimension Immigration are handled by FDI’s in-house lawyer authorized to practise before the Federal Court.
