Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

Detailed guidance on Canada Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), eligibility, passport linkage, admissibility issues, entry rules and travel requirements.

Canada Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an electronic entry requirement for many visa-exempt foreign nationals who fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. It is electronically linked to the passport used in the application, so passport details, nationality and admissibility history must be reviewed carefully.

Who needs an eTA to travel to Canada?

An eTA is generally relevant to visa-exempt travellers arriving in Canada by air. It is not the same as a visitor visa and it does not create temporary resident status by itself. Some travellers are exempt, while others require a Temporary Resident Visa instead. The correct document depends on citizenship, travel document, method of travel and immigration circumstances.

eTA eligibility and application information

The application normally asks for passport information, personal details and answers concerning immigration and admissibility history. An incorrect passport number can make an authorization unusable for travel. A new passport generally requires a new eTA because the authorization is linked electronically to the passport.

eTA validity and entry to Canada

An approved eTA can generally remain valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever occurs first. Approval does not guarantee admission. A border services officer makes the entry decision when the traveller arrives and may examine the purpose of travel, length of stay, funds, ties and admissibility.

Previous refusals, criminality and other complications

Applications can become more complex where a person has a previous Canadian visa refusal, removal history, criminal charge or conviction, misrepresentation concern, medical issue or another admissibility problem. These facts should be assessed before answering application questions. Where inadmissibility is involved, an eTA alone does not resolve it and another remedy such as a Temporary Resident Permit may need to be considered.

eTA versus visitor visa

A visitor visa or TRV is a physical visa placed in or associated with the passport for visa-required travellers, while an eTA is an electronic authorization primarily used by visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada. Travellers should confirm the document required for their nationality and travel method before making arrangements.

How Fourth Dimension Immigration can help

We review the traveller's passport, immigration history, purpose of travel and possible admissibility issues, identify the appropriate temporary-entry document, and assist with applications or responses where the case is not straightforward.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eTA guarantee entry to Canada?

No. It permits an eligible traveller to board a flight to Canada, but admission is determined at the port of entry.

Do I need a new eTA after renewing my passport?

Because an eTA is electronically linked to a passport, a new passport generally means a new eTA is required.

Can I work or study in Canada with an eTA?

An eTA is a travel authorization, not a work or study permit. Separate authorization may be required for work or study.
