International Experience Canada (IEC) allows eligible young citizens of participating countries and territories to obtain temporary work authorization in Canada through youth-mobility arrangements. Eligibility, age limits, permitted categories and participation periods vary by citizenship.

IEC categories

The program generally operates through Working Holiday, Young Professionals and International Co-op categories. Working Holiday commonly provides an open work permit, while Young Professionals and International Co-op participation is generally connected to a specific employer or placement.

Pool and invitation system

IEC operates through pools. Creating a profile does not guarantee an invitation. Invitation prospects depend on the category, country quota, number of candidates and the rounds of invitations conducted during the season.

Before travelling to Canada

Applicants should carefully review passport validity, insurance requirements, proof of funds, admissibility and the conditions attached to their approval. The length of the work permit issued at the port of entry can be affected by documentation such as health-insurance coverage.

Important: IEC quotas, fees, rounds of invitations and country-specific rules can change during a season. Verify the current requirements before relying on historical figures. This article is general information and not legal advice.
