Visit Canada

Visitor visas, family visits, business travel and temporary resident solutions, with careful attention to purpose, ties, finances and immigration history.

Temporary entry is never automatic. Even when a person has the correct travel document, an officer must be satisfied that the legal requirements for temporary residence are met.

Visit and temporary residence services

What officers commonly assess

  • The genuine purpose and expected length of the proposed visit.
  • Financial support and whether the plans are reasonable.
  • Family, employment, property and other ties outside Canada.
  • Travel history, prior refusals and compliance with immigration laws.
  • Admissibility and whether the applicant will leave Canada as required.

Frequently asked questions

Does an invitation letter guarantee a visitor visa?

No. It is one piece of evidence. IRCC assesses the complete application and the applicant’s circumstances.

Can a visitor extend their stay in Canada?

A visitor may apply for a visitor record before their authorized stay expires. A visitor record extends status; it is not a travel visa.

Should I reapply immediately after a refusal?

Not automatically. The prior application and reasons should be reviewed first so that a new filing addresses the actual concerns.
